Does Foot Swelling Go Away After Pregnancy?

One well-known symptom of being pregnant is having feet that are increased in size. There are many different reasons why this phenomenon occurs. For example, pregnancy can cause swelling in the feet, which will increase the feet in size. Additionally, certain hormones released during pregnancy relax ligaments, which can ultimately result in the spreading of the foot bones. Many pregnant women will often want to know whether or not this increase in foot size is permanent. The answer might not be straightforward. The reason for this is that although foot swelling can eventually subside within a month following the birth of the baby, the spreading of the foot could potentially be longer lasting. If you are pregnant or are planning to be, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist to help manage the health of your feet during your pregnancy.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Texas. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Foot Arch Types and Gait

There are several different types of running shoes, and it can help to determine what type of running will be done before they are purchased. There are two important things to look for when considering buying running shoes. Comfort and stability as the foot lies in and moves through the shoe is one thing, and having adequate shock absorption is another. Additionally, it is beneficial the shoes can provide enough flexibility while having the proper amount of support, which can ultimately improve running performance. Experienced runners know the importance of determining what type of foot arch they have, in addition to knowing what their gait, or walking style is. The arches are categorized into three types, consisting of normal, high and low. Having a gait assessment is helpful in choosing the right type of running shoes, which can include motion control, stability, or neutral cushioning. If you would like more information about how to choose the right running shoe, please consult with a podiatrist.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Associates of Texas. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

Why Do My Toes Hurt?

Toe pain can be mildly irritating to debilitating. Common causes of toe pain are arthritis, bunions, and nail conditions. Such pain can come on suddenly or develop over time. As tiny as toes are, they contain a total of 14 bones, as well as joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels. All these things can become injured, infected, or prone to other conditions that cause pain. Arthritis can lead to stiffness, swelling, and pain in toe joints. A bunion is a bony growth on the outside of the big toe joint that can cause irritation and deformity. An ingrown toenail can cause pain, especially when it rubs against a shoe and is infected. If you experience persistent toe pain, visit a podiatrist who can diagnose the problem and provide treatment for relief.

All About Haglund’s Deformity

When a bumpy protrusion forms on the back of the heel, it is a sign that you may have a condition known as Haglund’s deformity. This condition is also less formally known as pump bump. Heredity is a known factor in causing Haglund’s deformity. People with high arches, those who walk on the outside of their foot, and those with tight Achilles tendons may be at higher risk of developing a pump bump. Another contributing factor is wearing dress shoes with rigid backs, which can lead to increased pressure on the enlarged bone and add to the pain. Symptoms of Haglund’s deformity include a bump on the heel bone, as well as redness, swelling, and pain where the heel and the Achilles tendon meet. If the pain of Haglund’s deformity becomes severe, it may be time to consult a podiatrist for a complete examination of the heel bone. This may include a variety of imaging tests and a gait assessment. Heel inserts, arch supports, or custom orthotics may be prescribed. In more severe cases, a walking boot, soft cast, or surgery may be an option. For more information, please consult a podiatrist.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Associates of Texas. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
